Help! Up rating from 1000gph to 3000gph sand filter

I decided to break down and buy a new Intex 3000 gph sand filter. I have a summer waves 18'×48" easy set pool. As far as enlarging the holes for the new fittings, I have a quick question. Would it be easier with the pool full, half full, or empty? Any additional info would be helpful!! Any photos an absolute PLUS! Thanks in advance
