Dirty Water

My pool filter shut off and as soon as it did there was dirty water coming from both skimmers and the main drains. What in the world? I'm thinking it's a check valve but why so dirty?

What kind of filter do you have? When was the last time it was cleaned? It does sound like a bad check valve is sucking water from the returns back through the filter, essentially back washing it into the pool. If you can't replace/repair the check valve right away give the filter a good cleaning/backwash so it doesn't dump dirty water back into the pool.
