I'm fairly certain everything will be OK. Last year I brought the level down to just below the skimmer, installed an eye and skimmer cover and plug. Left the valves open and they of course had water dripping out eventually and froze up. No issues. This year, I brought the water below the eye level and didn't plan on using any plugs, keeping valves open.
