I was adding CYA granules into the pool. I followed the instruction by pouring the granules down the skimmer. Later on, the pool store guy said I should have used a sock instead. I have a cartridge filter and now all the granules are probably lodged at the filter. Will it eventually dissolve? I did an experiment by putting a teaspoon of CYA into a cup of water, despite vigorous stirring, the granules are still there a few hours later. I have test strips that also test for CYA but I am not getting meaningful readings.

Adding CYA through the skimmer is just fine. We also tend to recommend using a sock, but there is nothing wrong with putting it in the skimmer. You should run the pump for 24 hours after adding CYA and don't clean the filter for a week.
