I saw a post saying we should vacuum to waste (vs. through the filter), but doesn't this dump the water? I vacuum "leisurely", so I would think I'd lose too much water and I'd be better off vacuuming to filter (sand) and then backwashing. Any advice on this?

You generally vacuum to waste when you have a big mess and the filter would need almost constant cleaning. It consumes a lot of water.
Yup...if you have a pool bottom covered in mud for example, it would be fruitless to filter it. Just dump it!
