I have seen the stuff on here for cleaning my sand filter but I was curious if I need to replace all of the sand in the filter every few years or so?

We suggest NEVER replacing sand. Mine is 11 years old and looks like the day I put it in.
Do a deep clean at least once a year (there's a guide for that in Pool School) and your sand will be with you forever.
