Need recommendation: 2 speed pump or not? If so what timer to go with it?

Well my 10 year old Hayward 1.0Hp Hydramax2 died tonight. I'm looking at 2 speed options and have found the following:
Pentair 340042 SuperFlo High Performance Energy Efficient Two Speed Pool Pump but I'm not sure about what timer to use to be able to switch speeds automatically.

Any suggestions?

Also from the reviews these pumps are short on documentation. Any links to detailed wiring diagrams are appreciated.

Why do you think you need to automatically switch speeds?

Before my solar controller was installed, I just left it on low for when it ran each day and manually switched to high when needed for backwash, cleaning, etc.

I figured it needed to switch between high speed at start and low speed for longer times. I'm also looking at a variable speed unit

It can start and stop in low speed. You should not lose prime when the pump stops.
