The colors can be fairly pale. I find that they are very obvious on a white background, but I sometimes have trouble with them on more varied backgrounds.
Another thing that can cause problems is if you do the test too quickly. Ideally, you want to give each drop 15 seconds or more to swirl in. Doing that helps keep the color transition relatively clear and obvious.
