Blocking off one suction inlet in a duel inlet system - harmful?

Hi all - we are having issues trying to use a clamp on skimmer with our intex pool due to low suction. There are two suction inlets, and if we block off one of them with our hands, the skimmer works great. Also cannot vacuum our pool without blocking off the other inlet (we have been using a plastic tupperware lid!) We have a decently powerful pump, were careful to purge all the hoses of air, and back flushed the filter to be sure we had maximum sucking power, but nothing works except blocking the other inlet.

My question is, how necessary is that second inlet valve? Would we do damage to our pump if we just left it blocked off? Would it not provide enough filtration if we only had one inlet?

We are also thinking of buying larger inlets, cutting the holes bigger and attaching plunger valves to both in order to open and close them at will.

Any thoughts/ideas/advice/warnings are appreciated - thank you (details about our equipment is in my signature, btw)

It is fine to block it off. Using plunger valves is a good idea! Those clamp on skimmers were designed for use back when the intex pools only had one inlet and one outlet.
