Dry acid chemicals like "pHDown" are sodium bisulfate. They work the same to lower pH as muriatic acid does, but they add sulfates to your pool water. Every 1lb of sodium bisulfate per 10,000 gallons of pool water will add about 8ppm sulfates. Sulfates above 300ppm can cause damage to plaster known as "sulfate attack" and sulfates are detrimental to the coatings on SWG cell plates.
