Noob question....can I backfill dirt against my pool walls/posts?

Just finishing up my doughboy palm shore installation today, and I have some sections that are about a foot or so below grade. Can I just simply backfill against the walls posts with dirt or sand? Or do I need to drop mulch in there to create a barrier?

Thanks!

As far as I know, Doughboys are rated to be fully buried. Adding mulch that would hold water is the last thing I'd do below ground.

I know the landscaper coming to put stone around mine are putting a protective coating anywhere that is getting backfilled

Put a couple of inches of pebbles or a french drain at the bottom, then cover with dirt. You want the soil to be able to drain well.
