DE in sand filter

I read a post (but can't find it) about adding DE to a sand filter to improve filtration. Anyone have thoughts about this? I changed the media from sand to zeolight - a pool store guy talked me into it. If the DE is a good idea, how much should I add? Should I add it directly into the filter, or should I introduce it through the skimmer?...
