Green pool and can't get it clear!

We filled our pool this spring with water that had a lot of iron in and so got that cleared but couldn't get it clear. About 2 weeks ago it started to get a green tint and just this week we started getting more serious about getting it cleared. We are testing the water 3 x's a day and adjusting things daily. We had been slack in keeping the chlorine level up before this happened. How long does it take till we see a difference in the water. we have been putting algaecide in every few days and vacuuming every day or 2. Any suggestions.:(

Hello and welcome to TFP! It sounds like you are attempting to use pool store products and methods to clear your water, and we simply don't believe that's the best way to approach the issue. When you have algae, you need to do a TFP "SLAM" (link below). That requires regular liquid bleach (chlorine) and nothing else. You know you have metal (iron) in your water, and now by adding algaecides you may have added copper as well. Best thing to do right now is stop and do the following:
- Order one of the TFP-recommended test kits for yourself; either a TF-100 or Tylor K-2006C. That's priority #1. I recommend the TF-100 (XL Option) with Speed Stir.
- Add nothing to your pool but perhaps 1/2 gallon or regular bleach each evening. Nothing else until the kit arrives.

Once you receive your test kit, post a full set of numbers and we'll help get you back on track. Nice to have you with us.
