Low CYA adverse affects?

I haven't done a CYA test in about a month and when I did I noticed that it was lower than 30 (it was 60). Initially I thought I had a false reading and retried the test with the same results. Upon reading here about people loosing CYA when they have a FC level of 0, it occurred to me that this happened to me. Long story short, my flow sensor cable was snapped (overly friendly dog chasing rabbits), which caused my SWG to stay off and I did test my FC to be 0; hence the cause and I corrected the problem (currently producing Chlorine). At this time, there were no visual indications the pool was anything but normal (other than the test results).

I am assuming that this is what happened to my CYA and the only thing that I did not find is if there are any other issues (of the CYA being consumed by 0 FC) that I need to be aware of or address? I did add some CYA already (all that I had on hand) so I am waiting to retest after 1 week to see how much more I need to add.

Depending upon how you added the stabilizer, you may not need to wait a week to re-check.

To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. Squeeze the sock periodically to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

If your FC is holding on its own after all of that then you got very lucky. Watch the FC closely though to ensure it's holding as your SWG gets back up & running properly. If you suspect unusual FC consumption each day, do an overnight (OCLT) test to rule-out algae. Hope that helps.
