Is it normal to see a little bit of sand after backwashing?

Hello,
After I backwash a see a little pile of sand by the end of the discharge pipe.
I won't think this is normal. Any ideas why this is happening?

I'm not sure if it's normal, but mine has always done it. When I think about the backwashing process, I don't see how you could not loose a little sand each time. When the water flow is reversed, the sand all mixes around and I'd think for a little to get pushed out with the backwash water would be normal.
