Sand in return line

If you're sure it's coming from the filter, it's probably a broken lateral. They are not expensive to replace but you do need to scoop out all the sand to do the job - time consuming. If you google "sand filter lateral replace" you'll find a couple videos about it.

How much sand?
Only after a backwash?
Only after turning the pump on?
Continuous while running the pump?
What type of backwash setup does the filter have (multiport or push/pull)?

Knowing more detail may help guide you to resolve the issue.

It appears to be only when the pump first comes on. It's enough you can see it and then slows to nothing within a minute or so (or at least looks like nothing). There is always a fair amount of sand on the bottom of the pool. It doesn't matter if there has been a recent backwash or not.

You may want to check the condition of the spider gasket in the multiport first.

To check if sand continues to accumulate, after the pump is on, brush the area where the sand settles and check again about 10-15 minutes later.

If you do wind up having to open the filter, plan ahead and get some PVC unions to put in line near the multiport valve so you don't have to cut and glue the lines if you need to get into the filter in the future.

Your multiport valve should have a model number on it. Knowing that number, you should be able to match up the correct spider gasket easily. The spider gasket is an internal part which seals the ports and allows water to only flow to the sections needed based on the valve handle selection.

Here's a link to a site that can help determine the exact one you need - and a picture for reference (the one linked to may or may not be the exact one you need).
