After seeing white film floating in the skimmers from our 4th of July party, I thought I'd look to see if there is a product out there that would absorb body oils, sunblock oils, etc. I left my filter running for an extra long time yesterday so my pool is back to normal for now. I am here wondering if anyone has any experience with products like these.

Are they helpful, a gimmick, or even worse, harmful in any way to the equipment or chemistry of the pool water?

Yes, they are helpful. Raising FC 2-3 ppm before a party and after also helps a lot. You can raise it up to shock level for your CYA or near it today to help clear it up faster. [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

I love my Skum bug. I buy a new one every year.

Whenever we get stuff in the water we throw it in the skimmer and it clears right up.

I don't keep mine in the skimmer all the time though. It becomes a floating island for the bugs.
