Have a 14x42 intex ultraset above ground pool. Filter it came with was powerful enough. Got a 2500 gph intex Krystal clear filter pump. Working but pool water becomes like a wave pool and water is spraying up into pool like a fountain. Is this normal? Is it just too powerful? Any ideas how to correct this?

Sounds like you have quite a powerful pump now. 
Usually we hear more stories of not enough pressure or circulation. Well, if it's that strong, and there's no speed adjustment on the pump to reduce it enough for your liking, perhaps you might consider splitting a new line from the pump to another return? If you have access to the side wall to create another return jet, that might help, and/or you could run another PVC line for an aerator/fountain perhaps?
Also, please add your pool info to your signature by going to the top of the TFP web page (just under the Pool School button) and select "SETTINGS". On the next page look to the left for a menu bar that says, “MY SETTINGS” and go to "EDIT SIGNATURE" to enter your pool and equipment info there. Or you can click EDIT YOUR SIGNATURE.
