Pool equipment is very old and dated and am already having some issues with the spa draining into the pool when all equipment is off. But I also joined here to learn how to maintain my pool by myself instead of hiring someone. Glad to be here and hopefully I can learn a ton!

You can certainly maintain yore pool yourself. 
It starts with the proper test kit though (TF-100 link below). Make sure to visit our Pool School page to start-off on the right foot, and check-out the TFP Table of Contents which also help you quite a bit as well. Nice to have you with us.
