Can I use the lower inlet for suction and the upper for the outlet water? This way I can keep it at a shallower depth so my grandson can stand in the pool. Then when he grows taller I can switch inlets.

The only issue you will have is the PH will rise very fast, you're basically doing a waterfall/sprinkler.. it will also cool the pool water and that may be a good thing... You will need to watch the PH, I take it this is a little intex pool, if so, grab a 5 or 6 way test kit from walmart and check your water levels.. if it is a bigger pool that stays up all year you really should get the Tf100 test kit..
