CYA test

My CYA test never gets to the point that I can not see the black dot. It (the test kit) is only a year old and I was successful in testing it last year. What gives?

I assumed the CYA was too high so I drained and filled. No change. Tested my tap water. Black dot all day long.

If you can see the black dot with the tube full, you have less than 20ppm CYA.

How do I raise it? That will make balancing my FC levels difficult, right?

Go to Walmart and buy a 4 lb. jug of it, it is granular. Think it switched to a pink top this year. Also called conditioner. Use PoolMath to try and take it to 30 to start.

Adding CYA to your pool has absolutely no affect on FC levels. Calculate your dosage and test in 24 hours but you can assume it's in there from the minute you apply the dose.

CYA protects your FC from quickly breaking down in the sun. And it also buffers the harshness of the FC.

Is it ok to add the stabilizer with the sock method in the skimmer, and turn filter to re-circulate so it doesn't go in the filter?

I usually hang my over a return, and give it a squeeze every once in awhile to help disburse it. Works well for me.
