Backwash section of filter leaking heavily

Hi,

My backwash part of the filter is leaking about 15L a day. Could someone help guide on what I could do to
fix it? Or best to higher a specialist?

Is it a push/pull or multi-port backwash valve?

Sounds like you need to inspect/replace the seals inside.

One you push/pull to change to backwash and one you rotate.

Pull the 8 or so screws and inspect the spider gasket for damage.

Could I disassemble the filter without draining the pool? If so, what would be the proper steps to take?

You don't have to drain anything, just turn off the pump and make sure a timer will not turn it back on until you have it put back together. If you can post a picture of the multiport valve (that's the name for the rotate one) we can tell you how to take it apart.

also, maybe a new filter would outweigh cost of repairs?

If the top of your multiport valve looks like this, you remove the screws and pull the top up out of the multiport valve. Turn it over and check the condition of the spider gasket. It is the rubber gasket on the diverter that looks a little like a wheel with spokes. If it is loose or torn it will need to be replaced. The parts to repair the multiport should be less than $100. Replacing the whole filter would cost hundreds.

It seems parts for my filter are discontinued. Do I call the manufacturer?

I spoke to the company that built my pool, they advised the parts would be around 190 and labor 140. I looked into Hayward filter as many of you had, and they advised that it would not be compatible with my plumbing. Could someone advise if this information is correct or they are just providing incorrect information?

i tend to trust TFP more than any other pool nowadays

Parts quotes are hard to second guess.

The OE parts may be discontinued, but since this is the company that installed the equipment in the first place you've got to give them the benefit of the doubt. They know exactly what they put in, so I'd expect they either have parts that they know are compatible or still have some of the OE gaskets kicking around on their own shelf.

They know exactly what they put in, so I'd expect they either have parts that they know are compatible or still have some of the OE gaskets kicking around on their own shelf.

I guess my question was replacing the filter with another one all together. They mentioned that Hayward filter would not work with my current set-up. I thought all sand filters are made pretty much universal?

Try contacting inyopools.com ... they are pretty good about finding hard to find parts.

When I called the individuals that built my pool, the representative advised that if I stick to the same brand of filter I do not need to change my plumbing, but if I change brands, I would require new plumbing. I am confused.

It's probably a matter of the hard plumbing not being in exactly the right position for another model filter to fit right in. Hacking pool plumbing is not fun at all.
