This evening I added some washing soda to the skimmer (55 oz). When it made its way through the filter green cloudy stuff came out of the returns. Bad spider in the multi-selector or just should have backwashed before adding the soda?

I have no idea. I doubt the spider gasket that had anything to do with it. When did you last backwash?
This is pretty much a guess. You might Deep Clean the filter. Have you ever done it? How to is in Pool School
May not make any difference. I did change the sand this season. I'll try the deep clean.
