Replace ball valve with Jandy Valve

I want to replace an old ball valve with a new Jandy no lube valve.

Should I put a union on each end of the new valve?

Can I use a union from Home Depot or does it need to be pool specific?

Welcome to the forum. They really get bulky if you use unions. I glued mine straight in. My thinking was....Every "wear" part is replaceable with the valve in place so while It could be wrong, I wasn't really ready to give up the space.

The chances of the valve body going "bad" is virtually nil.
