I have owned this pool for 28 years and never had this happen. Hooked it over the weekend, and when I run the pump/filter with the "eyeball" on the return, the pump looses some of the suction, and the water in the skimmer swirls and has a vortex. If I remove the "eyeball", everything runs great. Checked hoses, O-rings, etc. Everything ok. If I run the pump with the filter turned to waste, it runs great, but back to circulate with the "eyeball", problems.

What is your psi? Do you drop prime when the vortex occurs? The pool water level should be high enough in the skimmer that there is never a vortex.

The pool water is high enough. When the vortex occurs, the basket on the pump goes to about 1/2 full, but still pumps some water. The big question is why does this do it only when the eyeball in installed?
