New Skimmer Question

We are completely renovating our pool and installed two new Pentair skimmers. They installed the tile and the base of skimmers intake opening is approximately 2-3" below the bottom of tile line. Basically, the tile is downsloped into the skimmer.

My contractor said this is normal but I've never seen it like this in friends pools. Is this normal? Thank you

I just went out and looked and my tile border ends about an inch above the skimmer opening. The skinner throat is completely tiled, though.

I doubt if yours will be noticeable when there's water in it because mine sure isn't. I've owned it six years and I couldn't recall.
