Mushroom pool timer

We have a kiddie pool with a mushroom/waterfall setup. The mushroom pump runs nonstop during pool hours. I was thinking maybe it would be beneficial to put it on some type of timed switch kind of like you see the jets of a spa hooked up to....

Intermatic FF60MC Timer. Intermatic 60 Minute Spring Wound Timer FF60MC.

It would reduce wear on the pump ( less run time)
and save electricity. Is there anything wrong with what I'm trying to do. Maybe the possibly constant on and off the the pump causing premature damage???

Thx.

Other thing is the mushroom pool gets used maybe 3-4 hours a day. It does not need to stay on for 12. I was thinking the kids could turn on the timer if they wanted the mushroom pump on then it would just shut itself off and so forth.
