Removing O ring from Hayward Tristar pump lid

Is an O ring removal tool or pick recommended to get the O ring out of the cover of strainer basket on Tristar pump? I don't want to destroy it by using a screw driver. It may still be good. Does anyone know of something around the house I could use to get up under it?

How about a table knife or a cheese spreader? They're usually thin and dull. Slide around both sides to loosen any hardened grease before you try lifting it.

Thanks Richard. I found a cheap tool at Auto Zone but think I will try the knives first.
