Using Robot During SLAM?

the only damage may be if something big was in there that it got stuck on or damaged, other than that it will help your SLAM along faster :)

Another question. My robot does terrible when the pump is on. Gets stuck on the main drain, rarely gets to the shallow end and can't climb walls. So what is more important, keeping the pump circulating or allowing the robot to do the full job?

Turning the pump off for a couple of hours is not going to create any problems but what's more disturbing is that there's a perceived interaction between your pump and robot. That should not be happening.
