AO Smith Motor Is Humming and Wont Start

Hi All,

I have a Starite pump with an AO smith Motor C48K2PA105C5 1 hp. I tried to get it going and it just hums. I figure it rusted up over the winter and I could not reach the impeller to move it along. Does anyone have any tricks to try and save the motor?

With power disconnected, see if you can get to the back and turn the motor from there to break it free. You might have a cover in the way, but then might be able to get a wrench or socket on the motor's shaft to spin it a few times.

Can you access the rear of your motor and attempt to spin motor shaft with a 1/2 wrench? This will help identify if your motor is truly seized. Next check your capacitor located on top of motor. Do a thread search for "motor humming"

I was hoping it had access to the shaft but its blocked. Can I remove the contacts to get at it?

Just try to turn the governor (silver piece with the springs). It is attached to the motor shaft.

Thank you for the help, I was worried that I was going to break the spring but your suggestions worked. The pump motor is back in service.

That usually means the bearings are starting to go so you might want to prepare yourself for a motor change at some point.
