The DE will last forever, but the bag won't. Store that thing in a sealed garbage bag or a trash can or a rubbermaid tote or something, because if that bag gets wet, you'll have a mess of unbelievable proportions.

I like to use a simple painters breathing mask when handling dry DE. Any hardware store has them. Do NOT breath in the dust as it is not good for you.

The weak attempts at package marketing on pool chemicals always cracks me up. I can see how pools feel so complicated to people who rely on pool stores. Fortunately I found this forum early on (not before I wasted $80 on di-chlor, though).

I can actually think of a scenario where they might have a point. DE does a better job of getting the really tiny particles out than sand or cartridge. Some people don't want to see any floating things in the water at night when the light is on. DE is best at cleaning that up.
