911 Answer Desperately Needed!!!

We have a Hayward 1HP Pump but for some reason we cannot remove the top b/c it SPEWS water everywhere, we are unable to clean out the basket which we are sure is completely full.

Help? What do we do?!?

Do you have a shutoff valve to turn off the water going from the return to the pump? If not can you plug the skimmer with a tennis ball? It sounds like that gravity is working against you here.
