why would all of a sudden you need more that 2 dippers

of DPD powder to turn your test sample pink. Up until this point, I've always had bright hot pink with two dippers and today, I had to use three.

Normally you need more R-0870 powder when the FC level is higher. There is also some variation in how much the scoop actually holds, since the powder grains are fairly large relative to the scoop.

That would be right because I had shocked the pool and the FC was pretty up there.

I thought you only used "one heaping scoop" no matter what. how do you know to use two or three? it has to become hot pink?

Just pink. My2, You are using the "scoop end", right? Not the flat end?

Even at shock levels my solution has always turned pink with one heaping scoop.

My instructions say if the pink appears and disappears, add more powder.
I've never seen this myself, but apparently somebody else said it could happen and that's what to do about it.

I'm using the scoop end.

My test kits says to use 2 scoops and if it doesn't stay pink, add more.

I have to keep my chlorine high b/c of a high CYA. I think I may work on doing more of a drain and refill, but since I'm moving this summer I haven't made up my mind. We brought out CYA down a good bit over the winter months by doing several drain and refills. We are 100-120 now.

Yesterday was the first time I had to use more than 2 scoops, but I had shocked the pool the day before.
