Pump makes metallic ping sound

I just got my pump running this season. It spent the winter out in the elements and not covered. I am hearing occasional metallic pinging sounds maybe a momentary metallic scratch. I believe it is on the dry end. I checked to make sure the impeller was cleared.

Any ideas on what this is? Should I be running it?

I have a new variable speed pump in the box. I was going to replace it after the pool has had its spring break-in.

Last time mine did that there was a snail shell banging around in there.

Was it in the impeller or in the motor housing?

Could be debris getting in the fan. There's a fan mounted on the shaft just inside the front of the motor. There are vents in the front and back to allow for airflow. Air gets sucked into the front vents and blown out the back vents.

This is interesting... I was trying to think about how to explain the sound. Water dripping on an air conditioner compressor fan came to mind. Also popcorn being made in a sauce pan. The fan may very well be were to look.
