Sand filter

I've got a Pentair sand dollar sand filter SD60 that I'm doing a deep clean on and after pulling the top I see that it is only 1/2 full of sand. Does this seem right?

It does require some "freeboard" at the top of it, from memory I think for that filter it is about 10" of open space from the top.

I have a Tagelus filter, manual here lists 10 1/4" of freeboard, but I can't find it spec'd in the sand dollar manual.

I think it's low. Generally, sand filters need sand about 2/3 full. The online manual should tell you.

The manual said the amount of sand is listed on the filter housing which reads 250lbs. I have no way of knowing how many lbs are in my sand filter so with it being 1/2 full should I add or leave it as is?

It sounds like it's no more than 15% off of the recommended level. I'd suggest not worrying about it, unless you notice a significant issue with filtration. And even if there were an issue, I would just add some DE or "Jack's Magic Filter Fiber Stuff" to improve filtration of smaller particles. But I do that anyway, so there's no additional effort.
