30,000 gal gunite pool leaks

I have emptied my swimming pool for about 2 months now.it was costing a lot for filling it up and chemicals because of leaks. I was told I had leaks across pool and in main drain. Need to know what is best to use an also if ok for my pool to be emptied this long? Getting ready to have rain in grapevine Texas. Help!!!!

Do you mean what is best to use with regard to treating the pool chemical wise? All the products we use are common things like Bleach (AKA liquid Chlorine,) Muriatic Acid, and sometimes Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) for certain situations. The uses for these, or other products are discussed at length in Pool School. Begin reading there with the ABCs, and start working through the other articles. Ask all the questions you might have here in the forum, and there will be plenty of folks who'll enjoy helping you through. You can find Pool School at the top of the main page, or by clicking the links in my signature.

As for leaving the pool empty, it's not good for the Plaster, or other finish you may have, particularly once it gets hot. The sooner you can get it right and holding water, the better.

Are you getting close to having it repaired?

Best for fixing leaks is a two part epoxy put into the cracks, if the cracks are small hairline cracks. If they are larger then you should get a professional involved. Also with rain coming next week the black clay soil is going to swell and could shift your pool shell. It is always better to keep water in the pool.

It sounds like you have a gunite pool. Where are the leaks? In the plaster? In the main drain itself? Around the main drain? Do you have expansive soil? What is the cause of the leaks?

As Pooldv above states a common way to repair small cracks is epoxy. This can be difficult work beyond the ability of the normal homeowner - handy man. You may want to have a couple of pool builders or repair specialists come in and give you bids and tell you what they think is the problem. Then you can decide which one to use and have them do the work.

Figuring out the cause is important. Gunite pool structures are over engineered to prevent cracking -- if the crack you need to figure out why so it doesn't repeat.
