Can you repair a heat exchanger?

We have a Jandy Lite2 Heater, after opening our pool this spring, one of the copper tubes is leaking. I looked up the part replacement and OUCH--at least $600.00 for the heat exchanger. My son, who is fairly knowledgable (fixes industrial air compressors) thinks it can be repaired or adapted. He wants to plug the faulty tube. Any experts like to handle this one?

Bypass the heater and let him have at it. For $600 it's worth a shot, but the hole you see may just be the start of things to come. If it's a water chemistry issue you've probably got several thin spots and that's just the first one to wear all the way through. I don't know that he'll be able to repair it, but let him try so that if he DOES find a way you can come back and save some dough for a few more people!
