Cloudy FAS DPD FC test

Folks,

I've noticed something weird happening with my FC test. I've been using the TF 100 tests since Nov of last year. When I run the FC test and add 0871 to get a clear solution the solution is cloudy. Used to be clear and the kit is only 4 months old so I doubt reagents are a problem. Just to be sure I tested my neighbors pool water and the test is crystal clear just like it used to be for me. My FC level has been high as I completed a SLAM 2 weeks ago and we've had unseasonably cold water so the FC level is dropping much slower than normal. I've had high FC levels before and the cloudy test didn't happen. None of this seems to affect my pool which has been crystal clear throughout. My last couple of weeks test data (starting with the SLAM) are shown below. The only other thing I've done is partially add my chlorine with trichlor to get the CYA levels up from <20. It's worked well and when I reach 40 I'll switch back to bleach only.

As far as I can tell this isn't affecting the pool at all but I'm curious what's causing this.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Maybe you pulled some gunk out of the spa lines when it drained???

I found a couple references from previous posts related to this same issue as follows:

This happens quite rarely, generally when CH levels are high, and can be ignored, i.e. the test is still valid. You continue to add drops as long as there is a red/pink color to the sample. When it goes cloudy white you are done and the results are valid. It was also suggested that using a SpeedStir can often prevent it from going cloudy in the first place.

Ignore the cloudiness. I have seen it time and again and it means nothing. The color change you are looking for is from pink to no pink or colorless (a sample can be colorless but not clear. Turbidity is not a color!). I thnk the word 'clear' might be confusing here. The Taylor instructions for this test never use the word "clear", they use the word "colorless", meaning lack of pink. Perhaps saying, until the pink color disappears" might be a better way to word this.

Maybe someone else will have another example.

I agree with TS, I get a cloudy/colorless endpoint all the time with the FAS-DPD test. You can ignore it.

And it also occurs with the DPD-only test when you add the first reagent (R-0001).

I agree thst it's fine to ignore. I can't explain it, and I've never seen it, so I can't offer why you are seeing this happen.

Thanks for all the replies. The main thing I was concerned about was if this was an indication of some problem. And it sounds like it is not. So I won't worry about it and I'll just keep enjoying taking care of my pool the TFP way.
