I'm curious, does anyone know how to control the way vBulletin decides if two posts in a row from the same user gets the dotted line with the "Update" label versus an entirely new, separate post? Seems like a timing function. It would be nice if there were a way to control it (other than editing a post with the correct BBcodes in place).

Just wondering.....

It is called "doubleposting" and is a feature of vbulletin that is off by default. Somebody liked it enough to turn it on.......

Can it be controlled by the user? Doesn't seem like it's a feature we underlings get to see ;)

This is a setting that is controlled via the software that will "merge" any posts made within a set period of time (TFP uses 5 minutes) to help reducing "bumping" of threads as well as other items.
