Wife with Fingernails being 'thinned' by pool?

Last summer, the 3rd summer we've had the pool, my wife kept reporting that her fingernails kept getting "thin" after being in the pool. Her nails have a tendancy to be thinner than mine anyway but were really thin by the end of the summer. No one else in the family really noticed it but I was wondering if I was doing something wrong...

I used a combination of BBB and SWG last year. Primarily bleach after Sunday night and let the SWG take care of things during the week. The salt readings stayed between 2500 and 3000 and I used more than 2 gallons of muratic acid during the summer trying to keep the Ph under control.

The overall readings last year were

    TC 3.5-4.0
    FC 0.5
    pH 7.6-7.8
    TA 80
    CYA 60
    NaCl 2800

    Thanks,
    Terry in NC

-This year it's taken 12 gallons of 6% bleach just to get the pool cleared! The bottom was a green/black when I opened it 2 weeks ago. I guess that's what I get for waiting so long .

Nothing that you are doing is likely contributing to fingernail problems. It might be a good idea for her to consult her physician about this though.

    Thanks!
That's what I've been looking at, nothing really makes any sense. I was wondering if it was the slightly high Ph levels but that didn't make sense either.
She's been to her normal MD and to her specialist and all is OK(?) and blood tests and bone density tests were solid (better than average). It just happens in the summer when she's in our pool though and has never happened before; that's the wierd thing.

I'm not saying that thinning of fingernails and chipping of toenail polish are anywhere near apples to apples, just giving you a link to a discussion from last summer that was interesting:

    why-is-my-toenail-polish-chipping-t5189.html?hilit=toenails

Is that a typo with your FC level from last season?

    You're done SLAMing when:
    1)You lose 1ppm or less FC overnight, & 2)You have .5ppm CC's or less, & 3)your water is clear.

Yes, the FC is actually at 3.5 as of last night.

That is an interesting thread about the nail polish "problems". The nail polish situation was what my wife noticed first; her nail polish would flake off, then her nails themselves seemed to thin.

I think that I'm going to contact Hayward to see what they can tell me about this. We had the SWG installed from the start so I don't know what it would have been like with just BBB. If this is the case I'd think that this would be something that a lot of SWG users would be seing.

    Thanks again Butterfly!

That's what happens when you're trying to read the small print from last year from a PDA!

Well, I'm still out here..... I guess I should have reported back and given you the cause! It turns out that it was the cheap base polish or top coat that the vietnamese ladies were using! I started using my own and doing them myself and never had any more problems!

This problem could very well be related fuzzy. Tell your wife to change her base coat and see what happens. I am using a China Glaze product - Strong Adhesive Base Coat.

    Hi Fuzzy,
I would recommend your wife try a nail polish that doesn't contain fermeldahyde and other harsh chemicals. I think OPI is a decent brand. There is also a water based nail polish made by Honeybee Gardens. Here's a site your wife might find of interest:

Re: Wife with Fingernails being 'thinned' by pool?

    Thanks everyone!

I look intently at all of the the chemicals in the pool but don't look at the chemicals on the nail polish at all: That's not *usually* my area to worry about.

The wierd thing isn't just the nail polish, but that her nails are so flexible (as in weak) during the summer that they actually bend backward and have no strength.

It's never happened at any other pool, just in our pool with the SWG, and she's the only one it happens to.

Have your wife drink an envelope of Knox geletine in a glass of juice every day. Believe it or not it works to strengthen the nails. Avoiding formaldehyde in polish is a good idea also. (I have been a licensed barber and cosmetologist for over 30 years and used to teach both vocations, including manicuring.)
