Looooong rip in pool cover

My rectangular 30*19 pool cover has a very long tear, aprox 3' long, in the area that covers the stairs. I've looked at patches but they all state not to use on tears over 3" in length. I was considering trying to sew it up and then use patches over the hand sewn seam. Has anyone tackled any tears this long? Much appreciated.

If the cover is old and falling apart, it's better to replace it. If it's still strong, you could probably find a local place that can sew it back together.
