I have searched, but cannot find a thread describing how to insert photos. I get many error messages such as "invalid file" and "photo too large" even when I edit my photos to 640 x 380. Can anyone provide a link to a thread that will describe the photo rules?

Have you tried linking your photos from Photobucket? That's what many of us do here on TFP. Upload your pics to Photobucket (free), then copy & paste the IMG code for that pic from Photobucket to your TFP post. Works great.
Also, you can try going to the bottom of your quick reply post where it says “Go Advanced”, and then down to where it says “Manage Attachments”. It may let you upload them that way. They may show-up large because you can't adjust the size of the attachment, but it may work.

Yes, I do link photos from Photobucket but still have problems trying to load 600 x 380 photos. Image insert says photo too large.
don't do image insert. just move mouse over the img link on the photobucket page. that will automatically copy the link info for you. then come here and just right click and choose paste or use Ctrl+v.
