I added a skimmer closure and a plug for the return. Am I correct in not draining the pool to below the skimmer? Also, with the cover on, rain water is adding to the level below the cover....is that ok? Lastly, I have the skimmer gate closed so rainwater is collecting in the skimmer.....should the gate be open so it does not collect and freeze in the skimmer?

Do you have one of these gizmos? Blowout Skimmer Guard - Winter Pool Closing Accessories for In-Ground Pools
They absorb the freeze shock to avoid damaging the skimmer when ice forms.
If that's what you used, you should be fine. My pool is IG so my closing info might be different to yours though, so check around re best for AG. Eg. Those with inground and a tile line should drain below skimmer. Without tile line and with gizmo, and with single skimmer line, some techs don't drain IG's like mine.
