Using single speed pump to drain to waste

I have a dedicated single speed pump for a waterfall, 1.5hp 3400RPM.

My filter valve has no drain to waste option, so I need to drain from a standard hose valve attached to either pump.

I turned off the valve for the waterfall and hooked the hose up, but there was not a lot of pressure coming from the hose, but a TON of pressure coming out of the return.

If I shut off both the waterfall and the return, will there be too much pressure to the point of risking damage since the only outlet is a small garden hose?

I'm not sure what kind of valve you have to control flow to the return(s) but if you can slightly close the valve to reduce flow, maybe you can get more flow from the hose.
