Pool school seems to have conflicting optimal ph values. Either 7.5 to 7.6 or 7.7 to 7.8. Which values are correct for ideal ph levels?

It can happily be within that range, usually 7.5-->7.8.
One might lower it below 7.5 to perhaps 7.2 if dealing with calcium scale, but no lower on a routine basis.

While pH is important, you have to take other things into account (like TA, CH, and pool surface to name a few) to know what an acceptable pH level is for your pool. Anything in the 7s is perfectly safe to swim in, but the same safe water might be bad for your pool surface or equipment.
