I have a two speed Hayward pump that has the AO Smith motor on it. Have replaced the capacitor and the new one isn't working. Didn't work right away. i have replaced one before and it worked for about two weeks before it failed again.

Time for a different brand of capacitor, I think.

Do you have a centrifugal switch on the motor? If so, it could be that the switch isn't making contact and that's what is keeping the motor from starting.
I got a direct replacement for the original.

I dont know if i have a centrifugal switch on the motor. It does hum and then not start when switch turned on. Then it goes into the protect mode. I replaced the capacitor the first time and good for two weeks then I went and bought new one. Didnt work at all. Pump hummed and would nt start. It starts manually with screwdriver at base. Spins free with no apparent binding.
Maybe try a different source for your caps. They age just sitting on the shelf, so if your dealer has old stock it could be the source of the problem.

Try to get a capacitor that is made in Japan, not China. There's a difference. If not that, then it might be an issue with the motor itself.
Or,maybe the motor has a short in the winding, a loose wire on the back plate or... If the motor was reassembled, a wire is pinched somewhere.
