Bought a house that was built in 1954. It has a large inground pool, about 30-40 years old. Do I have to bond the rebar in the shell, none of which is exposed, or can I just bond the pool pump motor and light? House is located in California. The original pool pipes were copper. The segment between the pool edge and the pump base, about 5 feet, have been replaced from the pool edge to the pump with pvc pipes. The ladder handles will be non-metallic. Thank you.

I would think the pool itself would be "grandfathered in" to any current pool regulations.
If you're doing a renovation that requires a permit and inspections, you might have to bring the pool up to current code.

However, the physics behind the need for bonding have never changed, just the codes. If the pool is old and is not bonded, does not mean you won't have shocking problems in the future. It is possible that the deck re-bar is tied into the pool re-bar and providing something of an equipotential grid. bonding the light niche to the pump and other equipment is not a bad idea though.
