Removing/Replacing rod from Hayward C1200 filter.

I have a C1200 filter and I experence a problem where the top handle and rod are corroded together and the previous owner addressed this by having the bottom of the rod unscrew from the base of the filter. Unfortunately this means that it takes a ton of time to reattach the rod of the filter because you have to thread the rod just right.

I happen to pick up a broken C1200 with the same rod/handle assembly I want to swap, but I can't figure out how to unscrew the metal rod from the bottom. Any suggestions?
