Skimmer Basket question

I have two of these baskets in our pool. I am curious, what is the purpose of the rod through the top?
I like this basket because you don't have to reach in to remove it plus it does suck water through the handle when the basket gets full of leaves. I ask about the rod because sometimes it makes it hard to get leaves out of the basket as they catch on it.

You figured correctly! It's a dual purpose design which supposedly allows for easier removal, as well as permitting for water to bypass things when the basket is full of leaves or other debris. It's called a Skim Pro.

Let me re-explain, I am not asking about the vertical handle (I know what that is for) I am asking about the metal rod that goes across the basket. It seems to serve no purpose, other than to make it hard to empty the basket.

The metal rod is a handle. I believe that it is intended for use when you remove the plastic "handle".
