Which valves do i leave open during filtering?

I have 3 valves/pipes?
They're labeled as Main Drain/ Shallow Skimmer/ Deep Skimmer.
Which ones do i leave open/close when i am filtering/backwashing. Sorry if this is a dumb question, i'm still new to managing pools and slowly learning my way up.

All of them. You don't need much on the main drain. I would just open it a little bit until you just start to see a difference in the skimmer turbulence. Then you'll want to close off the closer skimmer a little bit until the flow looks equal inside the two of them.

Look inside the skimmer well and try to match the turbulence. Aiming returns and balancing flows is more art than science. Just experiment.
